If anyone at all is reading this and doesn't have a job or has one and is looking for a better one, by all means please listen carefully. Find a job with the largest possible corporation you can possibly think of. Working for a giant conglomerate or corporation is the greatest thing in the world. Lets take United Technologies Corporation for example. I have full health, dental, life, and accidental death and dismemberment insurance from them. And it costs me less than 100 dollars a month. I recieve a paycheck every two weeks from them which allows me to live quite comfortably. I recieved a signing on bonus from them. I also recieved a relocation allowance from them which turned out to be 50% higher than what my job offer said, and I recieved a tax allowance so the final amount would be exactly what they promised me after taxes. I pay 6% of my salary into a 401(k) account every two weeks which is matched up to 60% by the company. All before taxes. If I die suddenly, my nieces and nephew whose father died recently get 3 times my annual salary. I will have full pension benefits in 4 years whether I stay on with the company for only those four years or for forty more. I can buy a Dell computer at half the cost because UTC buys so many from them. I get a verizon phone practically free. And, most important, I am doing what I love which is designing parts for aircraft, and getting paid for it. SO my advice to anyone who is reading this: WORK FOR A HUGE CORPORATION!!! You will get so many benefits, it's nearly disgusting.

Starting to become a productive member of society! [10 Mar 2005|08:16pm]
I've now completed the final step to the transition from Rochester to Connecticut. Today I signed a lease on a place! Ive got a one bedroom townhouse with a garage too. 625 square feet, vaulted ceiling with exposed rafters, and a balcony. Its a really nice place, I'm looking forward to living there. Rent is $830/month with heat and hot water free.

So this past week was the one of the best weeks ever. I totally blew off school for the entire week and went up to Saranac, NY ad lived in a cabin with my brothers and nephew. Its really awesome to isolate myself from all technology and civilization for a long time. Its great. Theres no electricity, or running water or phones, and cell phones dont work up there, so I really was isolated. I shit in the woods, drank water from a natural spring and also bathed in frezzing cold 40 degree spring water. During the week, we cut down 2900 board feet of cedar and spruce lumber with chainsaws and horses. The chainsaws were probably the most technologically advanced thing we had at our disposal up there. We hunted our food, and cooked it over a wood stove. Homemade rabbit stew is really really good when you kill it yourself. But skidding logs with Belgian Draft Horses was really amazing. Those horses are the msot powerful animals I have ever seen. The team (2 Horses) was able to pull more logs and heavier logs than a tractor. We were taking trees out of the forest, because the wet groud causes the trees to have shallow roots, so when they get really big, they blow down easier and choke out the smaller more healthier trees that you want in the forest. And we were doing all the work with a team of horses, like the olden days. You really learn to appreciate the amenities and comforts of modern life when you can isolate yourself from it and live how our ancestors did. It's something I think everyone should do at least once in their life, by just going camping or hiking or something. It really relieves stress and better prepares you to handle more stress in day to day life. I can provide pictures of the camp and the horses skidding logs upon request.

Rest in Peace Mark John Ryan [19 Nov 2004|11:42pm]
At approximately midnight on November 19, 2004, Mark John Ryan, my brother, was involved in a motorcycle accident. He slipped into a coma due to severe head trauma, including hemorraging and swelling in the brain. He was wearing a helmet at the time, and it is not known for sure what caused the accident, but it did not involve a car or anyone else. At 3:00am this morning, he was read his last rites by a priest at Strong Memorial Hospital. At 2pm, doctors concluded that his condition was unrecoverable, and the family, knowing that Mark would never want to lie in a hospital bed rigged to a machine to make him breathe, decided that he should be removed from life support and his organs be donated. Mark John Ryan, born June 22, 1965 Second son of Mary and Dr. Gerald Ryan, Husband of Mary Ellen Ryan, and father to Jessica, 16; Nicole, 15; Mitchell, 14; and Allison, 8; Brother to Steve, 41; Chris, 39; Tricia, 36; Lisa, 34; Katie, 32; Dan, 31; Joe, 24; and myself, was pronounced dead at 7:00pm on November 19, 2004.

Mark John Ryan was the hardest working motherfucker I have ever known. Mark would have done anything for his friends and family, and the last words I ever heard him say were about how he wanted to bang his wife so bad. He died riding a motorcycle, doing what he loved and he felt no pain.

I'll see you again, man. We'll get Steve, Chris, Dan, and Joe all together and bust each others balls like usual. Then we'll piss off Trish Lisa and Katie by waking up their kids be seeing whose sled starts on the first pull. Wait for us, bro, and keep our beer cold. We'll see you again.

All Set [29 Oct 2004|08:30am]
I got a call yesterday from my boss from this summer at Hamilton Sundstrand.

I got a job offer, and I accepted it. This means when I graduate, I'll have a job already lined up. Pretty frakin' sweet. I think Im the first Mechie at UR to have a career lined up, but i dunno. This means I will be staying in Connecticut for good once i graduate. Can't wait until I leave Rochester. So Long Stinktown! I wont release financial aspects of the job unless you want to know. I will be doing just fine though. I'm really glad I got this job, because ill be working with the same people i worked with this summer, and i love what i did. Out of all the interns at Hamilton this summer (there were like 60 or so) i as ranked #1. Not to shabby. This shows that a strong work ethic, and busting your ass, and alsop going out for drinks with your boss really pays off.

How can anyone say the economy is bad? I've got a job! What makes me different?

Time to finally check off one of those things on my list of stuff to do before I die. It's always a good feeling when you can do that.

I saw Metallica Live. And counter to anyone's opinion about how they're old or how bad their new album sucks, they rocked the fucking house. They played all their classics and surprised me with some awesome songs that for some reason are't considered "classics" by the general populace. Songs such as Disposable Heroes, Fight Fire With Fire, The Four Horsemen, No Leaf Clover, and Whiskey in the Jar. They did, however play their standards. The only one absent that I would have wanted to hear was Creeping Death. Kirk did have a cool guitar solo during an intermission that was kind of a medley of a bunch of different songs put together. Very Cool. So, the night was a success. I woke up a little spaced out, head thumping, ears ringing, neck hurting, and mind still rocking. Also, after the show, Rick's Tally Ho is the new strip club in town and a very nice place. I will definielty go there again.

Now, in regards to life after college.

Why wouldn't anyone who isn't going straight to graduate school want to get a real job right after school? Living at home sucks, and not having money sucks. Why would anyone take a year off to "backpack through Europe" or to even take five at UR? Taking a year off and not taking advantage of your newfound college degree, in my mind, isn't a very smart thing to do. I fell like it's wasting an entire part of your life. Why would't you want to get a real job, get an apartment/house, and make money? Everyone wants money, that's why we went to college, right? So take your degree and GET A JOB. Become a taxpaying, functional member of our society. If you really want to make a difference, that's how you should do it. Not by amassing so much book knowledge, you might as well be a professor. Experience is the best teacher anyways. Hell, Justin finally got a job, didn't he? That should be enough hope for all of us!

I am so damn sick of politics. Bush sucks this, Kerry is so great that, Bush is right this, Kerry is weak that. Fuck it all. If you ask me they both suck. And anyone who belives that simply ousting George Bush from the white house is going to magically solve all our nations problems, you have your head so far up your ass, you don't know what's what. Clinton couldn't solve all of our problems, Bush II sure as hell can't, but what makes you think Kerry can? This is exactly why the 2 party system sucks so much. American are forced to choose year after year between the lesser of two people who are both: 1.) Really really rich. They are not here to serve you. They will serve the almighty dollar. bottom line. whether its Halliburton, or Heinz ketchup. 2.) They're politicians. That means they are lawyers or rich daddy's boys who weren't good enough to make a name for themselves through personal merit. So they went into politics. Politicans are scumbags, who will only do what they think is right, not the people they represent. 3.) Phoneys. I would vote for a politican who said straight out to the american people, I fucked up in life by doing this this and this and that. Nobody is perfect, and I feel more comfortable being represented by someone who isn't afraid to say they did drugs once or twice or a lot in colege, and still goes to strip clubs and drinks all the time just like any other red-blooded american.
Another thing i really hate is the media. There is not one mass media source that is non-biased. Fox is right wing, Everything else is left. I dont watch the news anymore because its pointless. It gives me no valuable information anymore. So I only watch King of the Hill and Simpsons on Tivo. If you ask me, we should elect the dude who invented Tivo to be president, because he is attuned to what this country wants.
If I hear 2004: Anyone but Bush again, I think I'll cry. That is the most ignorant statement I have heard in a while, and let me explain why. What if Pat Robertson or Al Sharpton was elected president? In either case, we would have a Theocracy which would be as repressive to us as the Taliban was to Afghanistan. Or better yet, let's elect John Ashcroft. Or how about Richard Fucking Simmons? get your head out of your ass. Its not like our economy is in shambles. Are there breadlines? You U of R people seem to be able to find enough money to pay 27 grand every semester for education. You seem to be pretty well off. Has George Bush's adminstration prevented you from finding a decent job? (Justin, I know you still don't have a job, but that's because your a computer scientist. i mean, come on, man.) Many of the seeds that are causing a lazy job market were planted long before Bush was elected.
This entry was in no way intended to be a political advertisement for Bush or for Kerry. I just wanted to point out that I think some people are misguided by what they see in the media.

Anyways, what ever happened to the good old days when young people didn't give a flying fuck about politics? Rock the vote? fuck that. I dont think I'm going to vote until someone I want to vote for runs.

My Job. [28 Jun 2004|12:43am]
I realized lately that everybody has been talking about their job or what their trying to get a job in. Then I noticed that I havent been up-to-date about my situation. First of all, I work for Hamilton Sundstrand. They make a LOT of different stuff, mostly aerospace stuff. For example they are the world's only manufacturer of spacesuits. they also build gearboxes and electronic engine controls for some of the world's most powerful jet engines. Among other things. So, the job I have there is going very well. I am working on 2 different commercial enigne programs and one military program. The 2 commercial are the PW2000 engine made by Pratt & Whitney which powers the 747 jumbo jet, and the GP7000 engine made by GE and Pratt & Whitney which powers the Airbus A380. The GP7000 isnt in production yet, but they have built a couple engines already, which is cool. The military project I'm, working on the is the F119 program which is the name for the engine that powers the new F/A-22 Raptor fighter jet. Compared to the F-14, F-15, F-16 and F/A-18 fighters that you've probably heard about, the F/A-22 blows them out of the water. For example, if there were a group of like, 5 F-14 Tomcats that wanted to attack an aircraft carrier or something, ONE ONLY ONE F/A-22 could intercept and destroy all those F-14's before they even knew the F/A-22 was there. Look it up on the internet if you don't believe me, or want to know more.

But, the bottom line is, I LOVE MY JOB. I make more money than is really morally acceptable, and I'm doign stuff I have a real interest in, and that is really freaking cool. So, next time you board an airplane, remember that 90% of the world's aircraft has something made by Hamilton Sundstrand on it. They sell little shot glasses with the Hailton Sundstrand logo on them in the cafeteria, so if anyone wants one, let me know. Also, I'm going to be in Boston this coming weekend, so call me if you wanna hang out, if youre in that area.

Life Dreams/Aspirations etc. [16 Jun 2004|11:00pm]
Well, I've gone ahead and made an executive decision. I recently learned that it will cost me roughly 4500 dollars to paint and fix the rust on the MG. So I've decided to put that project off. Instead of having a really kick ass looking car next year, I'll stick with my good old oldsmobile and shitty paint on the MG when the suns out. But in the mean time, I need to find something to don with the money I am making at my job this summer. So I have decided to do something I have always wanted to do. I am getting PADI certified. That means I can SCUBA dive! Lessons are cheap, and I've already bought the necessary gear on eBay. Certainly cheaper than a paint job, and it's something I have always wanted to do. My brohters Dan, Chris, and Mark are all certified, so I'll have no shortage of diving buddies. But if you're looking for something really cool to do, or if you're already certified, I'll dive with you! You can get gear for about 150 bucks, and its more economical to rent air and regultors, etc. rather than having to own your own and take care of it. All you need is a mask snorkal, hood, gloves, boots, and fins.

In other news, I'm thinking about selling my computer and getting a laptop. Its a Dell Desktop Dimension 8200 Pentium 4 1.8 Ghz PC with 196 (I think) MB RAM, 19 inch monitor, harmon/kardon speakers/subwoofer, CD/RW, DVD player, Windows XP. Im thinking about 600 bucks for the whole shebang. Let me know if you want it or know anyone who does.

Peace

Well, today, I brought the MG back from getting an estimate on a paint job. Apparently, it will cost around 4 grand to have the rust, dents, scratches, etc. fixed and painted. The goal of this summer is now to somehow make 4 grand to paint this thing. Some of you may or may not know, but I have put a hell of a lot of time/effort/money/blood/sweat/tears into this car since I was in high school. When I took hold of it, it had just been on fire, and I've only had it on the road since last may. Since then, I've rebuilt the carburetor so it runs perfect, fixed the electricals, redone the brakes, redid the interior, and installed a kick ass stereo. Now, the kicker is, that the car's title still remains in my father's name. So I think I am going to demand he either pay for a good chunk of this paint job, or sign the car over to me now. After this paint job, the grand total of money I have put into this car will exceed 8,000 dollars over the last 5-6 years. every cent I have ever made in my life has either gone into this car or my snowmobile. And the worth of giving this car a decent paint job and fixing the dents etc, is that in showroom condition, this is a collector's car. In it's current state it's too rough to demand any sort of good price, but a nice example is worth 10 grand all day long. That is the plan. Let me know if you want to donate any money. I will gladly remember you if you do. You will be rewarded for your generocity.

General Update [17 Apr 2004|01:33am]
[ mood | relieved ]
[ music | Beautiful People - Rilly Groovy ]

OK, I've got big news here. First things first- I got the much-coveted internship in Connecticut for this summer. I'll be working for Hamilton Sundstrand, which is the world's largest maker of aerospace control systems. i.e. Jet engine controls, life support systems on submarines and the international space station, spacesuits, etc. So, if you get on a plane theres a 90% chance that that wouldn't be working without Hamilton Sundstrand. I'll be living with my brother Dan and his wife and daughter at their house in West Suffield, CT. Im not entirely sure of the address but ill get it sooner or later. Theres 2 really awesome things about this job- 1. I'll be so filthy fucking rich this summer, it isn't even funny. 2. I'm almost guaranteed a career at Hamilton when I graduate. Very cool.

The second big thing is my housing situation next year. The original plan of attack was to stay at cook st. and sublet over the summer. Well, the two groups of people I had in mind for roommates since all my roommates right now are either seniors or UR dropouts, had bailed on me at the last minute. And, if you wouldn't believe it, it was the day ofter the housing lottery. So even if I wanted to live on campus again, i'd get a shitty room. Besides i've become accustomed to the not having to live on a hall bullshit that comes with living on campus. I like the off campus life. I feel i can control my exposure to the whole campus life thing and still keep connected with my friends form home, which is something that never really happened when I was on campus. So, I discovered that my parents own a beautiful 2 bedroom house in Greece, that will be uninhabited next year. So, on the condition that I do a little work to fix it up, and finish the attic that would turn this house into a 5 bedroom house, I'll live there for free. My best friend from home, eric is also going to be living next door, which is cool. I have a yard and everything. Maybe Ill get a dog. So essentially, I'll have my own bachelor pad, which is really a pretty big house. Maybe I'll turn the other bedroom into an office. sweet.

One plus of not living on Cook Street next year is I can tell Jim Candella to suck a nut. HAHA

The Big Apple [05 Apr 2004|12:00am]
Alright, I've finally been to New York City. It was pretty cool, except i din't really see downtown. I just helped my sister move from her place in the northern bronx a few miles up the road to this place in yonkers. The part of the city I saw could best be described as "Little Ireland". So freaking cool, there were 8 different Irish pubs on the main street, and everyone was calling me "Laddie", and had thick Irish accents. One thing I learned, is that Irish chicks are HOT. Every bar was full of them. I think I know where I'm going next St. Patty's day.

It's too bad though, we had so much work to do. My mom and sister didn't pack ANYTHING into boxes before we got there, and they ahd a week to do it. It sucked ass to have to make about a zillion trips and pack and move shit. I'm so exhausted. Friday, i was up at 7am to study for my ECE test, which I think I did well on, and then Friday night, Allsion, Matt, and Kerry came over and played plinko and beirut with us. Good times. The thing is, though, my brother and I left Cook St. at 3am saturday morning, so I didn't sleep at all that night, and was hungover on the car ride, and it was a small truck, so i had no room to stretch out. We got there around 11am and started working continuously until 11pm that night. Then I had to sleep on an uncomfortable couch, and get woken up at 8am by my 3 year old nephew running around screaming. did some more moving, then left for Rochester by 2:30pm. So, now that I left sunny and 55 NYC for snow storm rochester, this kinda sucks.

update [28 Mar 2004|01:10am]
ive been on a major bender lately. I guess the bender is left over from spring break. Truth is, I can count on one hand the number days i have been sober since spring break started. actually i could probably do it on 3 or 4 fingers. It doesn't seem like a bender though. I guess it's because I'm not drinking for the usual reasons, i.e. celebration, depression, because everyone else is, or whatever. I'm just drinking out of sheer boredom. Take last night for example, Randy and I were bored, so we made up a new drinking game. And to tell you the truth, it is a great game. Anyone remember plinko from the Price is Right? well, we ripped them off, and turned it into a drinking game. It works the same way except you win alcohol instead of money. So we ended playing with Dave I. and Mike the Mexican dude that works for my landlord. A good time was had by all. The funny thing is, I've been getting boldly trashed so often lately, but I havent been getting hangover at all. In fact, I felt like a million bucks this morning. 10 times better than waking up for class. I even woke up at like 8am to help COrndog's family move into their new house. Funny stuff.

In other news, and i think brian mentioned this a while ago, if you haven't seen the video for hurt by johnny cash i recommend you see it. It is a really great video.

soooo bored. at least I'm going to NYC for the first time ever next weekend with basically all my brothers to help my sister move inot her new place. So weshould be moving more beers than tables, thats for sure.
